                                                    PUERTO RICO

November 11, 1998- Lake Pinones, Puerto Rico,  The Convair 240 departed Luis Munoz Mazan International Airport carrying food and medical supplies to hurricane victims in the Dominican Republic.  Shortly after takeoff the crew experienced engine failure and turned back to the airport.  Unfortunately with the heavy load, the aircraft was unable to maintain sufficient airspeed and was forced down.

The aircraft hit the water tail first, bounced shearing the left wing.  The crew had only minor injuries.  The aircraft was located 3/4 miles from the closest useable shore.  Because of the shallow water and deep mud, the recovery was a little difficult but because this was a protected wildlife habitat. AAR&S personnel took steps to keep from any further contamination or damage to the habitat.
